I’m not sure if you’ve read my post, Dating a Doctor – Pros and Cons lately, but there are quite a few ladies over there venting their frustrations over dating a doctor.

These same ladies talk quite a bit about how much they love their doctors too. Here’s a sample:

“Well ladies, as someone that has been in a dating merry-go-round, I also wonder the same thing, ‘Is he really telling me the truth? Is he really that busy?’

Unfortunately by reading all these postings, none of us really will know, but one thing we all agree is that these men are wonderful when they are there!!!”

In talking to a few of my friends about this very same topic, we daydreamed a little bit about dating a doctor and how to do it exactly. Here’s how the conversation went.

Friend 1: I think dating a doctor would be awesome. I have a neighbor who is married to a gyno and she gets an ultra sound every other day. That is so cool.

Friend 2: I think dating a doctor would be fine as long as you had a lot of friends to keep you busy. And when you did see him he made sure to make you feel loved and like a woman.

Friend 1: As long as he looked like McDreamy I wouldn’t care how many friends I had.

Friend 2: I wouldn’t want to be the housekeeper either.

Me: I would just want lots of presents.

In the last several months quite a few Dating Tales readers have opened up about their doctor dating woes. It got me thinking about how to successfully date a doctor. You know, how to date a guy that you are attracted to because of his intelligence, his drive, and his compassion, and yet still say sane with all those crazy hours and silly egos.

Here is my advice for you if you choose to date a doctor.

Find patience. Understand that he is not like all the other guys. Chances are your doctor friend won’t remember all of his social commitments and he won’t have the time to call or see you as much as you like.

There’s never a reason to settle, but when dating a doctor there is reason to have a little patience with his busy schedule and over-stimulated mind.

Keep your sense of humor. Without laughter you might just lose your mind. Ask anyone who has dated a doctor before and they will tell you…if you can’t laugh about being stood up for the third Friday in a row or having to help your genius boyfriend match his outfits, then it’ll never work.

Light-heartedness is critical when dating a doctor.

Look for camaraderie with others who are also dating doctors. There is no better way to deal with life than to vent to someone who knows what you are going through. Wives and girlfriends of doctors everywhere can relate to the trials and tribulations of dating a doctor.

A Dating Tales reader stopped by to talk about her doctor dating woes, and she wants our advice.

Here’s her dilemma:

Hey guys, I am in serious need of advice. I am dating a doctor, and YES he is CUTE and adorable. To be honest he is everything i have ever wanted in a man.

Unfortunately, I love attention a bit too much. He is always busy. Our conversations are always rushed, he’s always on call or preparing for a presentation. I am very patient but lately I have been having major tantrums.

The thought of turning up to weddings and engagement parties on my own is daunting. It makes me sad coz i love him and miss him so much.

NOW does this mean he doesnt care? Can he turn down a call to spend time with me or am i being totally unreasonable? Just how busy are doctors? When we do meet up all he talks about is presentations and exams.

I hate meeting up with my friends who have boyfriends coz mine is never there HELP

Here are my two cents. Repeat after me: Dating a doctor is like dating a workaholic slash egomaniac. He’s not going to change, nor should he. He worked his butt off to get where he is and I’m guessing that he has so much invested in his career that very little will interfere with that.

Yes, doctors really are that busy and I’m sure he could turn down a call from time to time, but he probably doesn’t feel like it’s the right thing to do.

In a way, it’s admirable. I mean, I don’t have anything in my life that I would drop everything for.

On the other hand, I completely know how you feel. It really stinks to be lonely when you are not alone. I’ve been in relationships where I went alone to parties and spent half my night explaining why he wasn’t with me. It sucks. No one likes it.

My advice to you is to be honest with yourself about what you need. If what you need is lots of one-on-one time and a constant date to any social function, then dating a doctor is probably not for you. But if you can be patient with him and confident enough to go out on your own, then he’s worth it.

Alright, now it’s time for everyone else to vote on it.  Are doctors really that busy?

Last winter a very close friend of mine named Abbie met a doctor online. He was perfect on paper, or should I say on computer screen. They were the same age, he was smart (obviously), he had a nicely written profile, and his pictures were cute.

After a couple of brief phone conversations they decided to meet at a popular bar after work. Immediately, Abbie was attracted. Not only was she on a date with a doctor, but he was hot.

Then he opened his mouth. Apparently he was more impressed with the fact that he was a doctor than she was. It’s all he could talk about. After 45 minutes Abbie was bored and thirsty. He was too busy thinking of more things he could say about himself to notice that she didn’t have a drink.

Finally, she grabbed her purse and motioned that she was going to the bar for a beverage. He says, “Yeah, vodka tonic for me. When you get back I’ll tell you about my 4:45 consult today. And you can put it all on my tab? It’s under Dr. Die.”

“Dr. Die,” she exclaimed! “Your name is Doctor Die. No. Really?”

It was real and for the next 58 minutes she could not get over the fact that she was dating a doctor with the last name of DIE, nor could she get over her boredom.

Another one bites the dust.

I’ve recently been spending some time on OKCupid.com, an online singles site. It’s free and easy to sign up. No kidding, there is this woman Inga there to guide you through the process (you’ll have to try it yourself to find out). What I like best about the site is that you can write and take these fun tests. Tests that make you feel good about yourself. See, OKCupid says that I am capable of dating a doctor, yeah! (It’s actually hard to see, but it says I scored high on the test).

I’m also keen on OKcupid because you can specify if you’re interested in flings, long-distance relationships, friends, activity partners, etc. So regardless of whether you are looking for your husband, this is a fun one to try.

A close friend of mine has more courage than most women in their 20s. Not only did she eagerly take on a move to New York City and a challenging career, she can in the midst of complete disarray notice a hot doctor when she sees one.

Kayla was suffering from a serious flu. She couldn’t hold anything down and having gone two days without fluids or sleep she starting seeing stars. This is when two of her friends took her to the emergency room. She was instantly pumped full of fluids by the nurses and inspected by the doctor. The gorgeous, young doctor.

At first sight of the doctor Kayla cheered up attempting to look and feel better than she really did. But despite her efforts her lab work still showed signs of troubled kidneys and that required a physical exam.

After another couple of hours of tests, pokes, prods, and one more IV, Kayla was allowed to go home, but not before the doctor handed an information sheet with hospital address and home number. Through her foggy vision, she saw a love connection.

Was he extra gentle with the stethoscope? Did he take a second too long to brush the hair away from her neck when he looked in her ears? The way he smiled when she said she felt fine–did that glance last a second too long too? When he patted her back while she puked into a bucket, was that normal patient care?

Leaving the emergency room that afternoon, Kayla tucked the information sheet neatly in her purse because she knew she’d be needing that information soon. Not for her flu, but for her heart.

Twenty-four hours later Kayla found pen and paper and wrote:

Dear Hot Doctor,

Thank you for your attentive care this last Sunday in the ER. After a full 24-hours I feel much better and have you to thank. I do not mean to make an inappropriate step here, but I’m writing to give you my phone number. I felt a spark when you took my temperature, and it wasn’t my fever.

I hope to hear from you soon. 567-5309.
