Profile Writing Tips: Avoid Writing “My Friends Say I’m…”
Writing an online profile for a singles site is tough. It’s difficult to talk ourselves up and it’s also difficult to make ourselves sound different than everyone else. One of the easiest things you can do to set yourself apart is to avoid the phrase: “My friends say I’m…”
So what do you say instead? Here are a few suggestions.
When I look in the mirror: Why not say what you think instead of what other people think? Of course, you don’t want to sound arrogant, but you could easily say something like, “When I look in the mirror I see the girl next door; someone who likes to have fun, but is also well-mannered and ambitious.”
Show it, don’t tell it: A lot of people say, “My friends say I have a good sense of humor.” An alternative would be to tell a joke or to use punchy one-liners throughout your profile to show you are funny. Anyone can say they are funny, but it’s another story altogether to make someone laugh.
Only if someone cares: Your friends say you are a nice girl or gal, but who cares? Doesn’t everyone’s friends say they are nice? Isn’t that why they are friends with you? Same goes for you; if you must say what you are or are not, be sure it’s truly unique and not something that is generic. Try something like “I am a little adventurous. For example, I am the only one I know who enjoys running backwards. It really works by glutes.”
