Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Take the next few weeks to really take the time to learn about the issues and educate those around us. There are many statistics that I could list here that would be depressing and scary, but all that stuff doesn’t really explain how someone feels when they are assaulted anyway so I won’t even try.  But what I will do is give you these resources if you want to know more.

Oh, and one more thing. The blog Menstrual Poetry wrote a nice post about the documentary Searching for Angela Shelton. It’s a nice tie-in to this ever-important issue.  I suggest you check it out.

    Sara.

You are a good woman for posting this information. I am writing a paper on sexual harassment right now and I have been talking to a lot of my female friends about sexual harassment. Unfortunately, every single one of them has been sexually harassed at work. Some by their bosses, co-workers, customers. My friends girlfriend says that she was constantly harassed by her co-workers and she told them one more time and that is it. Because she is smart she kept track of dates, times and what comments were made.

Obviously I will never know what it is like to be a woman, but I will never understand how someone would take that from anyone. I am the person that asked for advice regarding the cashier and one day when I was in there one of the managers was grabbing her arm. I wanted to go over there and punch him right in the face, but violence never solves anything.

I got my bartending license back in 2002, and during training I was informed about Gamma Hydroxy Butrate (GHB), which is a date rape drug. After hearing about this I gave about 5 presentations in some of my college classes. There was at least one woman in each and every class (10-15 people per class) that said that they were drugged and raped. I got too emotional during my presentations, so I could not give anymore.

    Take care

Thanks for the comments. Many people I know have been assaulted, raped, harrased, and/or given GHB or other drugs too. It’s all very very sad, especially because this is a norm, not a rare occurrence.

Wanted to give this advice to anyone who may be reading this. I use to manage a Bath & Body Works and at times we work late past mall hours and always made it a happit to walk the girls to the car or if they were waiting for a ride sit and wait with them before I left many felt I did not have to but I insisted I would rather take 5 min of my time than find something happened to them latter. I always asked the girls if they knew what to do if they were attacked none really did or said have the car key in hand to poke their eye or kick them in the groin area which I think most rapist would expect. Told them the best thing be to with the heel of your foot hit the knee cap takes very little force to pop a knee cap they wont be protecting that area as they would thir groin and it would greatly disable them to run after you which would give you time to run into a public building or populated area where you can get someone to help you! So just a bit of advice I hope no one reading this would have to use it but we are not in a perfect world sadly.
